My Aunt gave me the book 'Faeries' by Brian Froud and Alan Lee when I was barely in the 3rd grade and I loved it to pieces-literally. By high school it had been looked through so many times, the binding had come undone and it was just a pile of loose pages. I had memorized each and every sketch and painting. Much of my early pieces were inspired by Brian Froud, as I have said time and time again. If it were not for Brian Froud’s mysterious and beautiful Fae, I may not have ever started painting Faeries. In the beginning, my greatest wish was to be able to paint like him. Of course, after a few years I realized it would never happen! Disappointing as it was at the time, I realized that there was no point trying to 'be the next Froud' and I was better off just focusing on being me. It was a good lesson. A few years later, I stumbled upon the work of Michael Parkes and was newly inspired by his beautiful marble buildings and auburn haired beauties. And of course countless other artists along the way inadvertently played their parts in shaping what I do now.

In the past I have tried to take inspiration from art and change it; build on it somehow; create something new out of admiration for others’ talent and inspirational works. It has helped me learn as an artist and evolve. I have learned from talking with others in my field that this is a common trial period many of us go through. It shapes us into who we will become as an artist, just as life’s daily trials shape us as people.

I’ve grown a lot in the last 10 years. I seldom look for inspiration outside my own head these days. I have so many ideas floating around in there, there’s no point looking elsewhere. I started this website so I could break away from my ‘old’ pieces and share the work that I do now. I feel my style has matured and changed dramatically over the last several years.

Hopefully my style will continue to grow and evolve as time goes by, and inspire future artists to build upon these ideas and add to the collective beauty of Faery, so we can all continue to nourish our souls with the nectar of the Faery Muse.

Thank you for coming.

~Amy
